Types of driveway surfaces

  • Tarmac Driveways – tarmac is still one of the most popular finishes for driveways today due to its longevity, flexibility, durability and price. Whilst tarmac is one of the most economical driveway surfacing solutions it can still be a very attractive option, especially with the extensive array of decorative edgings and features available. Additionally, savings can be achieved because most existing tarmacadam and concrete driveways can be overlaid with a new wearing course. This means less disruption when replacing an existing driveway and is more economical.
  • Resin Driveways – Resin driveways come in a few different colours so you can either choose a driveway which blends in with its surroundings or one which stands out as a contrast. It’s a great, low-cost option for redevelopment projects or for giving a project an instant facelift. When properly maintained, resin can last up to 25 years. Resin is one of the more durable materials for a driveway. However, Resin might not be the best choice if the area is heavily trafficked or vehicles regularly have to turn because frequent turning may cause the resin to lift.
  • Asphalt Driveways – Whether you need to install a new driveway or replace an old one, asphalt is almost certainly one of the options you will consider. A properly installed asphalt driveway will perform much like concrete but at a much lower cost. Asphalt driveways typically last 12 to 20 years, depending on the quality of the installation, the climate, the usage they get, and how well they have been maintained. Because asphalt is a petroleum product, it is more flexible and less susceptible to cracking than concrete. However, there is a fair amount of maintenance involved with an Asphalt driveway because you should seal it every few years, while concrete is essentially maintenance-free.
